Applications and Deadlines

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine (UNM SOM) uses the centralized American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) that is supported by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The AMCAS application of those applicants who wish to apply to the UNM SOM will be electronically forwarded to our school. The AMCAS Application Fee is $175.00 for the first designated school and $45.00 for each additional school.

Applications must be received by AMCAS by these deadlines:

Event Early Decision Program (EDP) MD/PhD All Other Programs
Earliest Date to Apply End of May End of May End of May
Latest Date to Apply August 1 October 1 November 1
Admissions Decisions Sent October 1 March 15 March 15

Deadline extensions will be granted only for problems that were incurred for reasons beyond your control. Please note that the AMCAS verification process can take anywhere from four to six weeks from the time that your application and all required official transcripts are received. Please review the AMCAS Instruction Manual for more information on the AMCAS application.

Applicants will be notified by email to complete the Secondary Application.

It is important for applicants to be aware that the AMCAS application does not allow updates to the clinical/volunteer/research experiences after submission. There are limited changes that can be made to the primary AMCAS application post submission. For a list of the approved post submission changes, please visit the following AAMC website: https://students-residents.aamc.org/applying-medical-school/article/amcas-postsubmission-actions/. If you are able to continue or begin a new experience after your application has been submitted, we recommend that you discuss it during your medical school interview.

AAMC Fee Assistance Program (FAP)

The AAMC strongly believes that the various costs associated with applying to medical school should not be a barrier. They are especially committed in helping aspiring physicians navigate the process during these especially challenging times. The AAMC Fee Assistance Program assists those who, without financial assistance, would be unable to take the MCAT, apply to medical schools using AMCAS, and more.

Here are five things you need to know about the 2025 AAMC Fee Assistance Program:

  1. The AAMC Fee Assistance Program is now open to everyone with a U.S. address. The U.S. citizenship and certain visa status eligibility requirements have been removed, and instead will require a U.S. address. Applicants will be required to provide proof of permanent U.S. address. Learn more about those documentation requirements.
  2. Parental financial information is no longer required for applicants over age 26. If an applicant is over age 26 on the day their application is submitted, they will not have to submit their parental financial information. We estimate that this change opens the program to an additional 1,000 applicants in need of financial support!
  3. AAMC Fee Assistance Program benefits are not retroactive. If an applicant is awarded fee assistance benefits, they cannot apply the benefits to previous registrations or purchases. For example, if an applicant registers for the MCAT exam, submits their AMCAS application, or purchases a prep product before receiving their benefits, they will not be reimbursed or receive the discounted rate.
  4. Recipients of the Fee Assistance Program can save over $2,000 by using the benefits on their premed journey. Each Fee Assistance Program award includes access to the Medical School Admission Requirements (MSAR) website, reduced fees for MCAT registration, waived MCAT Official Prep product fees, assistance in paying for an updated psychoeducational or medical evaluation (if required to support an MCAT accommodation application), and waived AMCAS application fees for one application cycle. Learn more about the benefits of the Fee Assistance Program.
  5. Some medical schools waive secondary application fees for fee assistance recipients. This information is provided for applicants in each school's MSAR profile. We encourage you to make sure your school’s MSAR profile is updated with this information.
